Marshall McLuhan wrote that the medium is the message. He meant that the form of a communication shapes what can be communicated.
He would have had a field day with the modern web.
What Your Platform Says About You
When you post on a centralized platform, you are not just publishing. You are:
- Accepting their terms of service — which can change tomorrow
- Handing over your audience — they own the relationship, not you
- Funding their surveillance model — your readers get tracked
- Betting on their survival — Google Reader, Vine, Tumblr
The infrastructure is not neutral. It is shaped by the incentives of whoever built it.
The Static Site as an Act of Sovereignty
A static site — a folder of HTML files served from a CDN — has almost no attack surface. It can be mirrored. It can be archived. It can be served from a USB drive if it comes to that.
This blog is just files. The source lives in Git. The output lives on Cloudflare’s edge. Either could be replaced tomorrow without losing anything.
That is the kind of resilience worth building toward.
